It's not just snobbery. No more than an opposition for each building in New York City to be, for example, the Empire State Building or the Plaza Hotel. It's simply a desire for 'Third Places' that are unique to a neighborhood.
As you point out we should all be gratefull that Starbucks popularized the coffeehouse but that doesn't mean we have to be happy when Starbucks No.150 opens in New York with it's standardized interior and menu.
What's wrong with diversity?
