I don't have specific reference, but a study was done on the impact of openiong Wal-Marts on communities. The number of "poor" in those communities decreased by 0.5% after several years. In comparable communities without Wal-Marts, the number of "poor" decreased by 2.5% after several years.

Yet another reason why I love Vancouver!
