Timing, Timing, Timing
We've all made bad decisions in our lives.
A majority would vote for a Democrat over President Bush if an election were held this year, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday.
Life is not just "location, location, location" but "timing, timing, timing."

The key words being, "if an election were held this year." Like you said, timing, timing, timing.

It's got nothing to do with timing. President Bush would have lost to "a Democrat" on election day. Unfortunately for that party "a Democrat" wasn't on the ballot, John Kerry was. It's a common phenomenon that generic Democrats often outperform actual Democrats on the ballot. This isn't a one party phenomenon. I'm sure "a Republican" would have beaten President Clinton many times during his two terms. Instead he faced a wounded George Herbert Walker Bush and a hapless Bob Dole.

TM Lutz has a good point.
Besides, the Democrats seem to be eager these days to persuade us all that they are "Republicans" in all but name.
We need a new party.

The last election was pretty close to a toss-up, really, so it's not surprising Bush should be trailing now, given the year he's had, and of course the fact that he's "facing" a generic Democratic.
I recall that by the summer of 1973 - i.e., six months after Nixon's landslide - the polls were giving a re-run of the election to McGovern. Now, that's a slide in popularity!
