In comments to an extremely interesting Interview With Alice Schroeder, author of a noted biography of Warren Buffett:
I am saddened that your book's publication resulted in the loss of your relationship with Warren. Yet, I can't help but think of a question Warren asks his college visitors about integrity. "Would you rather be the known as the world's greatest lover when secretly you knew you were the worst, or be known to the world as the worst when in reality you were the best?"
I think there is a similar question for authors, "Would you rather be friends with your subject, but not tell the whole story, or would you rather tell the full story even if it costs the you continued access, insight, and introductions that such a relationship brings?" (italics added)I didn't do all that well on IQ tests so maybe it's obvious but isn't the first question really the same, either way you phrase it? and has nothing to do with the second question?
