Perhaps "genius" is a word used by people when they have nothing else to say and want to be nice. According to this bit of puffery even Gehry is a "genius." (But not a top-level genius, I gather.)
This not-so-veiled (and ridiculous) attack on Gehry actually cheered me up. If even a genius of his level has to go through this, we mortals can take it.
A smart blogger like Simon should not be falling for hero-worship so easily.
We're all entitled to our opinions. And yours obviously
differs from mine. But let me say this on my behalf: I
have long lived among architects (in the US and Europe),
even built a hightech home, so am not a stranger to the
art form and its history. Also, I do not use the word
genius loosely, especially about living people. The last
person I can remember calling a "genius" was Federico Fellini
and he's dead. FWIW.

Even Gehry is a "genius"
Even? And scare quotes to boot?
That's like saying: Even Beethoven is a "genius".
