Ian Nairn?
I'd never even heard of Ian Nairn until I read this flattering post by Francis Morrone about Nairn's London.

These maps are wonderful. The US red/blue map of electoral college votes has been published so widely without annotation, that it has come to mean "what states went for Bush."
Intentional or not, graphics can greatly distort data, and the less people are inclined to read, the greater the power of these images.
The best part of seeing these variations, is that they show a less divisive election. I hope these are published widely.

The Urban Archipalago, the most recent feature from Seattle's alt-weekly, The Stranger echos this apparent corrolation between density/diversity and liberalism/tollerance. Worthwhile, imho if you can get past the characteristically cynical tone.
